Schema Markup: The SEO Strategy Your Competitors Don't Know About Yet
Most websites are invisible to AI search engines. Schema markup is how you get found by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and every AI tool your customers are starting to use instead of Google.

Google isn't the only search engine that matters anymore.
In the past 18 months, consumer search behavior has shifted dramatically. People are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews for recommendations instead of scrolling through 10 blue links.
Here's the problem: most websites aren't structured in a way that AI search engines can understand.
Your site might rank on page 1 of Google for your primary keywords, but if an AI tool can't parse your business information — your services, your location, your pricing, your reviews — you're invisible in the fastest-growing discovery channel in history.
The fix? Schema markup.
What Is Schema Markup?
Schema markup (also called structured data) is a standardized vocabulary that tells search engines what your content means, not just what it says.
When you add schema markup to your website, you're essentially giving search engines a structured database entry for your business. Instead of an AI having to read and interpret your "About" page, it can directly access fields like:
- Business name, address, phone number (LocalBusiness schema)
- Services offered with pricing (Service schema)
- FAQs (FAQPage schema — this is how you get featured snippets)
- Reviews and ratings (Review/AggregateRating schema)
- Team members (Person schema)
- Products (Product schema with pricing, availability)
- Events (Event schema)
Why Most Websites Get This Wrong
Here's what we see when we audit websites for schema markup:
- 78% have zero schema markup beyond basic meta tags
- 15% have only Organization schema (name and address, nothing else)
- 5% have partial coverage (maybe FAQ or Product, but not both)
- 2% have comprehensive schema across multiple types
That last 2% is getting a disproportionate amount of AI search traffic.
The AI Search Readiness Gap
Traditional SEO was about keywords, backlinks, and page speed. Those still matter, but AI search engines evaluate content differently:
- Structured data is weighted heavily — AI tools prioritize content they can parse programmatically
- Entity recognition matters — schema tells AI exactly what your business is, what it does, and who it serves
- Relationships between entities — linking your services to your organization to your location to your reviews creates a knowledge graph that AI can traverse
- Freshness signals — schema with dateModified tells AI when your information was last verified
If your competitor has schema markup and you don't, the AI will recommend them.
What Schema Types Matter Most
For local businesses and service providers, these schemas have the highest impact:
1. LocalBusiness / ProfessionalService
Your business identity. Name, address, phone, hours, payment methods, service area.
2. Service
Each service you offer as a discrete entity with description, pricing, and category.
3. FAQPage
Every FAQ on your site should be marked up. This is the single easiest way to appear in featured snippets and AI Overviews.
4. Review / AggregateRating
Structured reviews tell AI tools about your reputation. Google's AI Overviews prominently feature businesses with review markup.
5. BreadcrumbList
Site navigation structure. Helps AI understand your site hierarchy and generates rich breadcrumb snippets in search results.
6. WebSite with SearchAction
Enables sitelinks search box in Google results — a strong authority signal.
How to Implement Schema Markup
The recommended format is JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data). Google explicitly prefers it. Here's a minimal example for a local business:
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "ProfessionalService",
"name": "Your Business Name",
"url": "https://yourbusiness.com",
"telephone": "+1-555-123-4567",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "123 Main St",
"addressLocality": "Your City",
"addressRegion": "LA",
"postalCode": "70000",
"addressCountry": "US"
},
"openingHoursSpecification": {
"@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification",
"dayOfWeek": ["Monday", "Tuesday", "Wednesday", "Thursday", "Friday"],
"opens": "09:00",
"closes": "17:00"
}
}
This goes in a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag in your page's <head>.
The Compound Effect
Schema markup isn't a one-time SEO hack. It's infrastructure. Once implemented:
- Every new page you publish inherits your site's entity relationships
- AI search engines build an increasingly detailed model of your business
- Rich snippets in search results improve click-through rates by 20-30%
- Your business becomes quotable by AI — it can cite your services, pricing, and reviews directly
The businesses implementing comprehensive schema today are building a moat that will be very difficult to cross in 12 months.
